Ankle sprain

It is usually caused by an unexpected movement of plantar flexion and inversion. In most cases, it causes excessive stretching of the lateral ligament complex of the ankle joint, although several other ligaments of the various joints composing the foot may also be affected. Joint misalignments are also common and may prolong the pain. Immediate signs include edema (swelling), local heat, pain during foot movements and walking, and sometimes redness. These are inflammatory signs that appear as an immediate response to the injury. Depending on the severity of the sprain, there are different grades of classification and consequently different recovery periods. Treatment aims to promote better ligament regeneration while preventing fibrosis formation, restoring normal joint structures, strengthening the stabilizing muscles, normalizing range of motion, and proprioceptive training. Treatment is important not only to recover from the injury but also to provide good stability to prevent future injuries.
