Cervical disc herniation

A disc herniation is a pathology of the intervertebral disc, a structure whose function is to absorb impact between the vertebrae and increase spinal mobility. It is formed by a more central part, the nucleus pulposus, composed mainly of water, and a more external layer, the annulus fibrosus.

A disc herniation is therefore the projection of the central part (nucleus pulposus) of the intervertebral disc beyond its normal limits due to degeneration of the annulus fibrosus. The disc material that extends beyond its limits may come into contact with the nerve root exiting at different levels of the cervical spine, compressing it and causing local edema and congestion. The most common symptoms are cervical pain, cervicobrachialgia (pain in the neck and one arm), limitation of neck movements, numbness in the upper limb and/or hand, dizziness, headaches, among others (see cervicobrachialgia). It is a very common condition that can have a major impact on quality of life. For treatment, in addition to relieving symptoms, it is important to understand the postural and biomechanical alterations present throughout the spine and limbs, which may influence the cervical spine.
