“Whiplash injury” or “cervical whiplash”
It refers to an injury mechanism that usually occurs following impact in a car accident or during a dive, when the head is suddenly thrown backwards (hyperextension) and then forwards (hyperflexion). It may cause various types of damage mainly to the cervical spine, such as fractures, dislocations, disc herniations/disc injuries, ligament injuries, skull injuries, muscle spasms, among others. In these cases, due to the imbalance caused in the cervical spine and skull, misalignments may also occur in other regions of the spine and pelvis, making a global approach essential. Symptoms may vary according to the injuries caused, the most frequent being cervical and thoracic spine pain, restricted neck mobility, numbness in the hands, and dizziness.
