Facial Paralysis

It is a disorder in which paralysis or weakness occurs in all or some of the muscles on one side of the face due to impairment of the facial nerve. A person suffering from facial paralysis becomes unable to perform certain facial movements such as closing the eye, smiling, frowning, or moving the lips normally. It may also be associated with symptoms such as loss of sensation on the affected side of the face, dry eye, and changes in taste. Facial paralysis can be classified as central or peripheral. There are several possible causes, the most common being viral infection, auditory problems, dental problems, and cranial dysfunctions. Physiotherapy intervention aims to restore muscular function whenever it is possible to address the underlying cause.
