Ankylosing spondylitis is a pathology characterized by inflammation of the connective tissues surrounding the joints of the spine and major joints, such as the hips and shoulders. It is a chronic, painful, inflammatory, and progressive disease that predominantly affects the axial skeleton (the joints between the vertebrae) and the sacroiliac joints (joints between the sacrum and the iliac bones of the pelvis). It manifests mainly through spinal pain and stiffness. It may also involve extra-articular systemic involvement (internal organs) due to its progressive nature.
