Knee sprain

A knee sprain is caused by trauma or a sudden movement resulting in excessive stretching of the structures that ensure joint stability (ligaments). The most common mechanism causing the injury is a twisting movement with trauma to the outer side of the knee, leading to stretching of the medial collateral ligament located on the inner side of the knee. The medial meniscus and the anterior cruciate ligament may also be affected. Depending on the severity, it may be classified into different grades and may require a period of walking with crutches. Treatment is carried out according to the structures most affected and the severity of the injuries.
