Lateral patellar compression syndrome

This condition, also commonly referred to as patellar syndrome, generally has its etiology in poor alignment of the knee extensor mechanism, causing the patella to tend to deviate laterally when the quadriceps contracts, leading to excessive pressure on its outer facet and eventually instability and recurrent dislocation. This condition may therefore cause pain around the patella during activities such as walking, running, squatting, and going up or down stairs. It is often associated with lower limb misalignments and may also be associated with weakness of the vastus medialis obliquus muscle (the inner fibers of the quadriceps), increased tension of the lateral structures, as well as flexibility imbalances of the various lower limb muscles.
