This is a condition that affects the intercostal nerves located between two ribs. It manifests as radiating pain, usually along the path of the nerve, and may extend from the posterior region of the trunk to the anterior region of the chest. It commonly causes intense and sharp pain, aggravated by trunk movements and breathing. It may be caused by postural alterations, vertebral or costal restrictions, or inflammatory and infectious conditions. It is important to understand the origin and act towards relieving the nerve compression causing the symptoms.
