Guyon’s canal syndrome

Guyon’s canal is a tunnel in the palm of the hand, at wrist level, through which the ulnar nerve passes. This tunnel is mainly formed by two small bones and the ligament that connects them.

After passing through the canal, the ulnar nerve branches out to provide sensation to the little finger and half of the ring finger, as well as motor innervation to the small muscles of the hand.

Symptoms usually begin as a pins-and-needles sensation in the little and ring fingers. This may later progress to a burning-type pain in the wrist and hand, followed by reduced sensitivity and, eventually, difficulty using the hand due to weakness of the small intrinsic muscles.

In these cases, it is essential to make a differential diagnosis, understanding whether the origin of the problem may instead come from the cervical spine.
