Rheumatoid arthritis
The term arthritis refers to inflammation of the joints, characterised by pain, heat, swelling and limitation of movement.
Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic disease that progresses in flare-ups. It mainly affects the joints, but it is in fact a systemic disease, meaning it can affect other organs, such as the heart, lungs, eyes and skin, among others. It is classified as an autoimmune disease.
In the early stages, it usually affects the small joints, such as the hands, wrists and feet, which become painful and stiff, especially in the morning.
As the condition progresses, the joints may become deformed and significantly limited.
Physiotherapy can help relieve symptoms such as pain and limitation of movement, improving the patient’s quality of life.
