The World Health Organization defines healthy ageing as “the process of developing and maintaining the functional ability that enables well-being in older age.” Healthy ageing, like active ageing, highlights the need for action across multiple sectors, enabling older adults to remain a valuable resource for their families, communities, and economies, as they still have so much to offer.
We should all have the opportunity to live a long and healthy life, regardless of the stage of life we are in.
Healthy ageing is about creating environments and opportunities that allow people to be and do what they value throughout their lives. Everyone can experience healthy ageing. Being free from disease is not a requirement, as many older adults live with one or more health conditions which, when well managed, have little impact on their well-being.
