What is the effect of physical exercise before colorectal cancer surgery?

It is estimated that by 2040, the number of patients undergoing surgery for colorectal cancer will increase by approximately 52-64%. Despite advances in surgical techniques, 30-40% of these patients face post-operative complications that can delay treatment and affect their quality of life.

Can physical exercise before surgery make a difference?

Studies show that it can, although its effectiveness depends on how the programme is implemented. A study led by Pedro Machado, physiotherapist and researcher at Physioclem, revealed that home-based programmes were not effective in preventing post-operative complications and reducing hospital stay. One possible explanation is that these types of programmes are not individualised and are not intense enough to adequately prepare the body before surgery.

Do you know what the good news is?

At Physioclem, we are developing a personalised physical exercise programme, carried out in a clinical environment and based on the latest scientific evidence. This programme is tailored to the needs of each patient to optimise preparation for surgery and improve post-operative recovery.

The programme is intended not only for patients with colorectal cancer, but also for patients with other types of abdominal cancer, lung cancer, bladder cancer, prostate cancer and breast cancer.
