Clinical Exercise refers to physical activity programs specifically designed to prevent, treat, and manage chronic diseases, as well as to improve the overall health and functionality of people with certain health conditions. This type of exercise is often prescribed by health professionals, such as physical therapists, doctors, or clinical exercise specialists, and may include cardiovascular, muscle strengthening, flexibility, and balance activities tailored to the specific needs of each user. The emphasis is on using exercise as a therapeutic tool to aid in the recovery and/or management of health conditions.
At our Clinical Exercise Prescription Consultation, you will meet with one of our physical therapists, who is a specialist in clinical exercise, with the goal of jointly developing a personalized exercise program based on your health needs and clinical condition.
Steps in the process
Initial Assessment
The physical therapist conducts an assessment of the patient's health status, including their clinical history, functional limitations, and health goals. This assessment involves physical tests to evaluate cardiovascular capacity, muscle strength, flexibility, body composition, among others.
Prescription of Clinical Exercises
The physical therapist develops a personalized exercise plan, specifying the type, intensity, duration, and frequency of the exercises. This plan is designed to be safe, effective, and motivating, taking into account the patient's needs and limitations.
Education and guidance
The physical therapist provides detailed instructions, demonstrating the prescribed exercises whenever necessary, so that you can apply what you have learned during the sessions to your daily life. We also explain the benefits of the clinical exercises you perform.
Monitoring and adjustments
The exercise plan is reviewed regularly during Clinical Exercise consultations. Feedback from users between sessions is very important to know if the goals are being met or if there is new information to be included in the clinical process.

Fight cancer in motion program
One of Physioclem's greatest missions is to always be close to its community. It is from this DNA that the program “Fight cancer in motion” was born. A project by Physioclem and Vida em Movimento,
Physioclem Alcobaça, Caldas da Rainha, Oeiras, and Torres Vedras will offer free physical exercise sessions to people with cancer and cancer survivors, starting in September 2024.
Objective
- To provide the community, including people with cancer and cancer survivors, with access to physical exercise appropriate to their clinical situation, free of charge. Similarly, the aim is to convey the importance of exercise in cancer treatment and encourage the adoption of a healthier lifestyle, enabling people to exercise independently.
Service Provided
- Structured physical exercise sessions supervised by a professional specialized in oncology and physical exercise (physical therapist or exercise physiologist), fully funded by Physioclem.
Recipients
- People diagnosed with cancer, at any stage of their disease (pre-habilitation, rehabilitation, and survival), without signs or symptoms of neurological, cardiovascular, metabolic, or renal disease that contraindicate physical exercise.
- People who have completed their treatments (chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and surgery) less than a year ago.
- People who have completed their treatments more than a year ago and who have bone metastases are not included in this program.
Duration and frequency
- The Community Program lasts for one year. In the first 3 months, exercise sessions are held with in-person monitoring at the Physioclem facilities twice a week. Each exercise session lasts approximately one hour. In the following 9 months, there will be two follow-ups: reassessment at 6 months and at 12 months.
Structure
Initial assessment session
- This involves gathering clinical information about the person and conducting an initial assessment, with a pre-participation screening questionnaire, a battery of tests, and scales.
Structured physical exercise sessions
- These sessions are based on the stage of the disease the person is in, the results of the initial assessment, and the defined goals.
Reassessment sessions
- Sessions held at 3, 6, and 12 months, which include the application of the battery of tests and scales used in the initial assessment, as a way of analyzing the person's progress.
