We often hear about posture, whether it be poor posture when performing certain tasks or the posture we maintain in our daily lives. So what is good posture? What is the correct way to stand? What are the most common posture changes?
How and When to Intervene?
The ideal age for screening for postural problems is immediately before puberty: between 9 and 11 years old for girls, a little later for boys, corresponding to the period of fastest growth, which can accentuate postural disorders.
Many people have major postural changes and are asymptomatic, while others have minor changes with relevant symptoms. Early diagnosis and intervention, with or without symptoms, can stop or reverse a process that could lead to future complications. A postural re-education program based on muscle stretching offers effective and lasting results.
Posture Consultation
During the Posture Consultation, we conduct a detailed assessment of your posture and body movement, allowing us to identify areas where pathology is most likely to arise or exist. It also allows us to collect data for subsequent preventive action on unbalanced areas that are more likely to develop musculoskeletal pathology.
Most Frequent Problems
- Headaches or migraines,
- Neck pain (due to stiff neck or other changes);
- Herniated discs or other disc disorders;
- Neck pain or neck and shoulder pain, back pain, lower back pain, or sciatica;
- Tendon injuries caused by postural imbalance;
- Scoliosis, hyperkyphosis, hyperlordosis, horizontal sacrum, or other postural deviations of the spine; varus or valgus knees, flat feet, cavus feet, or clubfeet;
- Postural deviations such as anterior, inclined, or rotated cervical spine, elevated or rounded shoulders, internal or external hip rotation;
- Sagittal balance disturbance;
- Post-traumatic, neurological, musculoskeletal, sports, respiratory, or visceral problems.
Global Postural Reeducation
Global Postural Reeducation (GPR) is an assessment and treatment method that is not restricted to the location where the symptom/pain appears. It is based on finding the cause of the problem with the aim of permanently eliminating the symptoms.
Through carefully chosen postures, the shortened muscle chains are stretched. Each posture is designed to act on a specific set of muscles and is associated with a characteristic breathing exercise. The active role of the patient is fundamental and constitutes a large part of the treatment, which can be continued at home through recommended self-posture exercises.
One of the main objectives of RPG is to treat postural deviations and problems resulting from these deviations.
RPG and Aesthetics
Body aesthetics are equally important. Good posture is also more beautiful and elegant, with less abdominal volume. Therefore, it is important to understand whether some aesthetic constraints are based on poor posture. This will allow us to better direct the work that the person does.
At Physioclem, postural work is done through a combination of various techniques (Global Postural Reeducation, Osteopathic techniques, Hypopressive Abdominal Gymnastics).
